We're Baaaaaack!!! -- Tuesday June 1st, 2010
We're back!! It was a long hard trip but we brought over 50 dogs and cats from DHS and two other rescues in Mississippi, to homes in New England. Squeezy was adopted the first day!! We are hoping that this will be a monthly tranport with the help of ARF.
Going to New Hampshire -- Friday May 21st, 2010
Arf has come through for us again!!
On May 21st, DHS volunteers will be driving to New Hampshire and Massachusetts with 16 of our dogs. Titch, Bubba, Sliver, Bhudda, Doc, Roy, Pied, all 5 of the Melvin puppies, Macy, Muffin, Dale and Wyatt. They will all be going to Baypath Animal Rescue, the same rescue that received our last transport. Last time Baypath had pre approved families waiting for most of our animals. Remember the cute picture of Butterball napping after playing in the snow?
In addition, on this trip, we will be helping a Mississippi rescue, Madison Ark, by taking almost 20 kittens and 3 dogs to New Hampshire for them, on our way.
Arf has coordinated and funded this trip and is trying very hard to make it a monthly event. Hooray for ARF!!!!
Raffle winners!! -- Monday April 12th, 2010
Congratulations to Gary Martin of Rayville. He was the winner of our cash prize raffle. Angela Cruz, of Channel 10, drew the winning ticket on the April 12th morning show. Mr. Martin's wife was watching and called him at work.
Mr. Martin wasn't the only winner. The raffle and sales at the Franklin Catfish Festival raised over $2000 to help the animals in our care and to enable us to help even more. Thanks to everyone that bought a ticket and pitched in to help.
Valentines Day Bake Sale -- Saturday February 13th, 2010
Our DHS volunteers went above and beyond the call of duty on a cold and dreary Feb.13th to host a successful bake sale at the Winnsboro Walmart. Despite the largest snow fall in recent memory just a few days before, our brave ladies managed to sell out all of the goodies and raise over $400. These funds are needed to host another spay/neuter trip to The Big Fixx in Jackson and to purchase more T shirts for our booth at the Catfish Festival. A big "thank you" to all of you that participated.
The Big Fixx Dec. 2009 -- Thursday December 3rd, 2009
DHS was back at The Big Fixx, the affordable s/n clinic in Pearl, Ms. this week. This time with Kitties!! We took 7 foster kittens and 12 from the community. We were taking advantage of special pricing they offered DHS in recognition of our work on behalf of the animals in our area. They performed a s/n and gave a rabies vaccination for $25 per animal. Ultimately, only 14 were s/n as the vet there decided that 5 were a little bit too small for the procedure. but, it was a great day and all of our kitties came through their procedures with flying colors. Best of all, the donations from the community covered the entire cost of the trip and the procedures for the very first time! Lets keep it up!
Petsmart Adoption Day -- Saturday November 28th, 2009
DHS was once again at the Monroe Petsmart with some of our lovable dogs and puppies to meet and greet the animal loving customers.
The Big Fixx Oct 2009 -- Friday October 16th, 2009
DHS once again went to MSSPAN (Mississippi Spay and Neuter Clinic) with our new rescues. We were able to s/n 19 of our fosters at an affordable rate so that they are ready for adoption into loving homes.
ARF to the rescue again -- Thursday October 15th, 2009
On Oct. 15th, ARF came to the rescue of DHS animals again. They helped place and, more importantly, funded transport for, twelve more of our older and therefore harder to place puppies and adult dogs. We are especially happy that Buddy, our heart worm positive, all around lovable Lab, has found a home in Batavia, NY. He was in foster almost seven months. He and Charlie were both adopted by a young couple. The husband has his own home improvement business and Brenda, of Volunteers For Animals, tells us that both boys go to work with their new dad every day. To be able to find homes for Labs and Lab mixes is one of our biggest challenges as they make up about 85% of the unwanted dogs in this area.
So, once again our thanks to Chris and our buddies at ARF.
The Big Fix Sept. 2009 -- Wednesday September 23rd, 2009
On September 23rd,the DHS began what we hope to be a long and successful partnership with a low cost spay and neuter clinic, The Big Fix, in Pearl, Ms. Thanks to ARF's generosity in funding this project, we were able to take 16, under 40lb males dogs to be neutered. It was quite an undertaking in that all of the dogs could neither eat or drink after midnight on the day before (so they all stayed at Casey's house)and we had to leave for Pearl by 5am. Richina Ardoin showed up out of the blue and sans make up to help load up all of the puppies and we were on our way. We would never have made it there on time otherwise.
The clinic is great and run by efficient, caring people. Best of all, the vet is from Baltimore, so Casey was happy to have someone to chat with. Chris Mclaughlin, from ARF, met us there and took some pics that we will have on the site soon. All of the dogs were groggy but ready to leave by 4pm and we were home by 6pm.
The clinic runs two for one specials that we hope to be able to take advantage of in the future. To be able to spay or neuter our dogs and cats at 3 months of age and to be able to do it for less than what we are currently paying, will make it possible to have all of our pets spayed or neutered BEFORE adoption. Presently we have to arrange for pets that are adopted prior to six months old, to be fixed by the adoptive family's vet and we can't negotiate the price.
Thanks to Londi Moore of St. Frances Animal Sanctuary for referring us to The Big Fix and putting in a good word for us and to ARF for funding this project. We never could have done it without you. Most of all, "thanks" to Richina for loading puppies when she should have still been sleeping.
Sept 5th Bake sale -- Sunday September 6th, 2009
Our members certainly outdid themselves at our bake sale yesterday at the Winnsboro Walmart. In a little over 5 hours, we made over $700.00!!
Rene Anglin (and her Mom), Richina Ardoin and Ashley Cleveland did the bulk of the planning and setting up. Heather Parker, Nanette Crawford and Suzanne Angel pitched in, as usual. Lots of our members and supporters stopped by with items, even though they couldn't stay. The variety and amount of goodies was the best we ever had. There was everything from sweet potato pies to strawberry cheesecake muffins.
We had a bit left over when we closed up at 2pm but we dropped off our "left overs" at several Winnsboro businesses that display donation jars for us. They were very grateful and one even gave us an additional donation that put us over the $700 mark.
Best of all, we got the word out about the mission and purpose of the DHS and several animal lovers became members. One of our newest members, Alyssa, has experience with web design and has promised to give us (much needed) help with our web site.
So, thanks to all of the hard work of our members, we have gotten off to a big start on raising funds for the veterinary care of our animals.
Summer roundup -- Saturday August 29th, 2009
The DHS has been active this summer. Our adoptions and community involvement are increasing as more poeple become aware of us. We now have weekly ads in both the Richland Beacon News and the Money Saver, thanks to their generosity.
On Aug. 23rd, we transported 6 of our own dogs to a rescue in Rochester, NY. as well as transporting 10 others for Missisippi rescues to NY. and Canada. Of the dogs that were transferred to NY rescues, Lilly, Susie and Lou have already been adopted. Porky, Molly and Stella are still in foster. We also adopted to families as far away as Miami this summer.
ARF helped fund our trip and we are grateful to them for taking us under their wings to get started. We hope to make Northern transports a regular happening (as many deep south rescues do) until the time that local families provide enough adoptive homes for the animals in our care.
An order of Waffles -- Saturday August 29th, 2009
Waffles, a Rhodesian Ridgeback mix, was a product of an “accidental litter” and was destined for a kill shelter until a DHS member took her and her sisters into foster care. A rescuer in Wisconsin with Ridgeback Rescue of the United States offered to take the pups but we were unsuccessful in finding a transport to Wisconsin. In early August a wonderful couple from Miami, FL contacted us about adopting Waffles. They understood how difficult it might be to get her from north Louisiana to south Florida, but they loved her enough to try. After a Miami rescue volunteer completed the home visit and the adoption was approved, we started planning the transport. We sent out transport requests to all of our contacts far and wide. Three wonderful rescuers from Mississippi agreed to drive the transport legs from Jackson to Gulfport and the Wisconsin rescuer with RRUS put us in contact with a fellow rescuer in Mobile, AL who coordinated the transport from Gulfport to Miami. Many Ridgeback lovers all across Florida from the RRUS and the Sunshine State Rhodesian Ridgeback Club jumped at the chance to help a dog in need get to her forever home. From Boston Terrier rescuers to Bichon Frise rescuers and from Wisconsin to Florida, volunteers came together to help sweet Waffles reach her new home. Now she is safe and happy in sunny Miami with her forever family. Her new family thinks she is perfect and was well worth the wait. We are so grateful for everyone who helped Waffles reach her new home!

Transport to Pa. -- Saturday May 2nd, 2009
On May 2nd, DHS transported 19 dogs and puppies and 5 kitties to rescues in Md. and Pa. The trip was funded by ARF and they helped with placing some of our fur babies as well. This trip brings our total to almost 60 homeless animals that we have placed with Northern rescues this year. Of that number, over half have found forever homes. The rest are in foster care until the perfect family can be found. Some of our animals that went to the rescues in Pa. were Tony (aka Cyrus), Paulie (aka Randall) and Rocco (aka Reggie) who went to Helping the Helpless http://www.helpingthehelplesspets.com/animals/browse. Those were the Hutchinson Rd, puppies that Annette Ford and her husband rescued from a field near Delhi in Feb.
Dixie and Darla as well as the kitties, Elvis, Little Bit and Red, went to Mid Atlantic Border Collie Rescue http://www.mabcr.org/home/ourdogs.php. We also transported a needy Dalmatian, Dottie, to Pa. for PAWS of Monroe. We try to take as many animals as possible when we can and we notify other rescues in our area when a trip is scheduled.
We are working on our next transport for late July, possibly to Upstate N.Y.
